CPD- Continuous Professional Development
l Many of you have now successfully passed different Levels of CILT qualifications or are studying towards qualifications. Congratulations on your efforts and your successes so far.
l However, as you gain qualifications, do not be too pleased withyourselves so that you think your training is complete.
l In relation to your professional development you should never regard points in your career as the end of learning. To quote Winston Churchill, a great British leader from the past;"This is not the beginning of the end, but it may be the end of the beginning. By that I mean that if you expect to make a career in Logistics, learning and development it is an on-going process that will stay with you for your entire working life.
l In actual fact the learning that you have completed has laid down a foundation from which to build. This building will actually be your career and career structure and so it is vital that you have such a good foundation if your career is to bring you all you wish for.
l What I'm talking about is CPD - Continuous Professional Development. The on-going upgrading, re-skilling, validation process that enables all of us to maintain our changing skill and knowledge needs. MENTION HERE ABOUT EXAMINATION TECHNIQUES
l CPD is now universally accepted as a core ingredient for company, organisation and personal success. It is a feature of all major successful corporations and should be treated as an opportunity to improve, not an opportunity to spend two weeks away from the daily workplace.
l CPD is a very costly item so why is it so popular and why do leading companies and organisations feel they need to invest so heavily in their staff? It is all about cost and quality-just like supply chain management. It costs much more to recruit new staff than to train and develop existing staff PLUS the existing staff feel valued and part of the business process.
l ally? Have you really thought about where you want to work, where you see yourselves in 10 years - 20 years - 30 years? Without some idea (not necessarily fully detailed) it is difficult to begin the process of career development.
l So, what is your next intended move and is it realistic? His need for a realistic approach comes from the fact that development gives aspirations but aspirations need to be realistic and satisfied if they are to be a reality I'm not saying do not reach for the moon but, if you do, make sure you develop the rocket to get you there.
l Consider the consequences of where any development activity may take you before you embark upon it. Companies and organisations do not like training managers in skills that are not relevant or which may be aimed at making the manager more 'marketable' for headhunting. Ask yourself WHY am I doing this is it a career move or just fantasy?
n To be confident of your development needs you need to ask yourself. What skills do I need for the next move? But always remember there are millions of other people also wanting to succeed so what makes you special and are the skills you think you need really what your chosen sector needs?
n Ask yourself - and be honest-
n What skills do you have compared to what you need?
n What about future needs after this next move? .
n Where will you get the skills you need?
n What will the cost be and who might pay?
n Can I afford to acquire the skills I need? - Can I afford not to have them?
n How long will your existing skills and any new ones actually last?
n Am I sure this is my best direction?
n What about my staff and their skills needs?
n What about my customers,or technology,or legislation,or diversification,or anything else?
Please take this short message as my total support for Continuous
Professional Development and please ensure you never sit back and relaxth the skills you have. You must change and with change comes challenge. Challenges are part of life and part of business and you can only meet challenges with solutions. I believe these solutions can only
be found through CPD ——Thank You.
thought about business but many of the major case studies are now well documented and organisational changes and logistics solutions for Rank Xerox, Nike, IBM, Toyota, Honda, and the likes are well documented.
I thought about the I raq war and the basic problems of how you get food and water to 170,000 troops scattered in hostile territory without endangering their progress or the supply chain itself.
I thought about the Tsunami and the massive effort and logistical problems trying to integrate aid from over 100 different countries and get it to the right place, in the right time without the necessary infrastructure.
Whilst I was considering all these options it occurred to me that I'm in the biggest case study that the world has at the moment. I'm here in China and it is China that is the talk of the rest of the world. The logistical challenges China faces will only be solved through innovation, technology and professionalism.
Clearly, this has been recognised by your government, which, in itself is very satisfying, and should be applauded, given that governments so often resist change and innovation.
As a Westerner, or an observer, I see the core of the Chinese case study being linked to how Chinese trade, and the economy, can be managed and developed in such a way that the whole country can benefit from economic prosperity.
I can see the problems relating to infrastructure, labour skills, investment and technology as well as any other person but how these problems will be solved and they must be solved) will be the concern of better men than me.
Howa nation the size of China can be managed to realise its full potential is a case study of tomorrow and one which will never be matched in the sheer size of the problems orthe magnitude of the solutions. All I can say is that I wish China and everyone here the very best of luck for the future and I look forward to watching your progress. -Thank You for inviting me and taking time to listen
